Everything You Need to Know About Laser Hair Removal

Like, is it really permanent?

Consider this post the answer to all of your burning questions.

Laser hair removal is an incredibly successful treatment option for men and women who are looking to significantly reduce hair growth. At McKinzie Aesthetics Center in Edmond, Oklahoma, our aestheticians hold over a decade of experience in effective laser hair removal. Keep reading as we answer all of your questions on how laser hair removal works and what you can expect with your treatments.

How does laser hair removal work?

Our device emits broadband light energy focused through a specific filter to make the light behave like a laser beam. The light energy is ‘attracted’ to the pigment found in the hair follicle. The light energy is converted into heat which damages or ruptures the hair follicle resulting in reduction or elimination of hair in that follicle.

The hair in those damaged follicles begins to fall out within 1-2 weeks. After that, patient should notice a decrease in hair growth. First, the growth will slow or halt temporarily. Over the next couple of weeks, the hair will begin to grow as normal and most patients begin to feel the need to shave regularly again. This is the time that we want to perform your next laser hair removal section as the hair removal treatment is only effective when the hair is in the active phase of growth while there is hair actively growing from the follicle..

How many laser hair removal sessions are needed?

Most patients require approximately 6 sessions to achieve 80% hair reduction. Each of our packages contains 6 sessions. Maintenance sessions are available for a reduced cost in the event that patients desire additional treatment. This is not usually needed as some patients report closer to 95% hair reduction after completion of all sessions.

How far apart are the laser hair removal sessions?

The spacing of your laser hair removal sessions will depend on the areas being treated and how fast your hair grows. Facial areas are typically treated every 2-4 weeks on average. Body area treatments range from 6-10 weeks on average. Your provider will evaluate the degree of hair reduction you are experiencing at each visit and will help you adjust your sessions as needed to ensure optimal hair removal results.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Most patients tolerate hair removal extremely well with the average pain score on a numerical scale (0-10) being a 3. Some patients describe the sensation as a rubber band snap while others report more a generalized heat or ‘spicy’ sensation.

Pro-Nox (AKA laughing gas) is available for a small fee for treatments to the intimate areas such as a full Brazilian style hair removal package, as those areas are slightly more sensitive. Some patients choose this option, while others simply tolerate the few minutes of discomfort experienced during such treatments.

Does laser hair removal last forever?

While some patients experience semi-permanent results, there are multiple factors that contribute to hair growth. One of those factors is hormone activity. Your provider will help guide you on the number of sessions required to achieve 80% hair reduction. In rare cases, more than 6 sessions may be required on initial treatment. Areas prone to hormonal hair growth can require maintenance sessions. Additionally, maintenance sessions may be required every couple of years. These are offered at an extremely discounted rate.

Who is a good candidate for hair removal?

Generally, patients with lighter skin and darker hair are good candidates for hair removal. However, patients with darker skin can still experience hair reduction. We require a consultation prior to treatment to determine if you are a good candidate for treatment. White, gray, red and blonde hair typically does not respond well to treatment.
